American Savings Bank’s new “flagship” Maui branch in the Maui Business Park near Target and Lowe’s will open in May, an official with the bank said.

The opening of the single-story, 10,000-square-foot bank will coincide with the closing of the Kahului Branch on Puunene Avenue, which was built in 1963, Beth Whitehead, executive vice president and chief administrative officer at American Savings Bank, said Thursday.

The two-story building near the Maui Mall began as Maui Savings & Loan Association, which was acquired by American Savings Bank in 1973, she said.

The new bank in the business park developed by Alexander & Baldwin Inc. “will be the flagship campus for us on Maui,” Whitehead said. In addition to banking facilities, the building will have drive-thru teller lines, ATM, a training area, break room, outdoor lanai and larger parking stalls than at the current location, she said.

The cost of construction, which began in June, was estimated at $6.5 million, according to the building permit filed with the county.

The 1.5-acre lot on the corner of Pakaula and Hookele streets was purchased from A&B in December 2014 for $4 million, according to county property tax records.

“We anticipate our business to continue to grow in our new flagship Kahului Campus,” said Whitehead. “We have already seen much growth in the Maui Business Park in recent years, with economic activity on the rise.

“With businesses and organizations such as Safeway and the County of Maui opening in the future, we look forward to being a part of this central, vibrant hub on Maui.”

The new Maui Service Center, which will replace the facility at the Maui Mall, will be located at the corner of Hookele and Alaihi streets. The county purchased the site from A&B for $7.1 million, which included 30 acres near Baldwin Park; the facility is estimated to cost $27 million to build.

In February, A&B announced the construction of the Ho’okele Shopping Center, which will be anchored by Safeway on the Paia side of the Hookele Street-Hana Highway intersection. Safeway officials said in November that they expect to open the new 57,400-square-foot supermarket in 2019 while closing its East Kamehameha Avenue store.

American Savings Bank has six branches on Maui — at the Foodland Kehalani, Kahului, Kihei, Lahaina, Pukalani and Wailuku. The bank also has a branch on Molokai.

Another major bank near American Savings Bank’s Kahului Branch on Puunene Avenue, Bank of Hawaii, opened its new $3.2 million Kahului Banking Center at the corner of Kamehameha and Puunene avenues in April 2015. The bank moved a couple of blocks down Puunene Avenue to its new site and closed its old bank, which had opened 57 years earlier.
